Earth-616, Earth-199999 and the Sacred Timeline Explained
Understand Marvel’s overlapping universe labels, why comics and MCU sources use 616 differently, and what Loki means by the Sacred Timeline.
The short answer
Earth-616 traditionally identifies Marvel’s main comics reality; the MCU also uses 616 for its main screen reality. Earth-199999 is another established designation for the MCU, used in Marvel’s reference material. The Sacred Timeline is the timeline framework introduced through the TVA in Loki. These terms come from different storytelling and reference contexts, so they are not a universally consistent numbering system.[1][2][3]

What does Earth-616 mean?
In Marvel’s comics context, Earth-616 means the principal Marvel Universe. Marvel’s own 2020 explainer uses that designation while identifying the MCU separately as Earth-199999.[1]
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness uses 616 for the familiar MCU reality when the Earth-838 version of Christine Palmer describes it. Reusing the number does not make the movie characters identical to their comics counterparts or import the comics’ entire history into the films.[2]
The practical fix is to name the context: “comics Earth-616” or “the MCU’s Earth-616.” That small qualification is clearer than asking a reader to infer which system you mean.
Is Earth-199999 just a fan invention?
No. Marvel’s own reference discussion explicitly calls the MCU Earth-199999. It therefore should not be dismissed as a label fans simply made up. The confusion comes from that designation coexisting with the films’ use of 616.[1]
You do not have to choose a winner to navigate the stories. If a source uses 199999, establish whether it means the MCU; if a film uses 616, follow that film’s context. A guide should acknowledge the overlap instead of silently turning two labels into two different versions of every movie.
What is the Sacred Timeline?
Loki introduces the Time Variance Authority, or TVA, policing deviations from what it calls the Sacred Timeline. Marvel’s episode-one account connects Loki’s arrival at the TVA to the events of Endgame and the agency’s charge of a timeline violation.[3]
Think of this as a story concept about monitored history, rather than another Earth catalogue number. An Earth label identifies a reality in a particular naming system; the Sacred Timeline describes the framework the TVA is concerned with. The show develops that framework, so early institutional claims should not be treated as a complete, unchanging explanation of the multiverse.
