Do You Need Warbreaker Before Words of Radiance?
Warbreaker adds optional Cosmere context, while The Way of Kings is the direct predecessor. Choose a break in Stormlight without a compulsory detour.
The short answer
No. Read The Way of Kings before Words of Radiance; Warbreaker is optional wider-Cosmere reading. Our recommendation is to read Warbreaker before Words of Radiance if you want to catch connections and welcome a break between Stormlight novels. If you are eager to continue the story on Roshar, go straight to Words of Radiance and return to Warbreaker later.[1][2]

What is the actual prerequisite?
Words of Radiance is the second Stormlight Archive novel, following The Way of Kings. Warbreaker is a different Cosmere story. Sanderson’s own reading-order guidance recommends following each series sequentially while allowing readers to begin with different Cosmere series.[2][1]
For this decision, separate continuing a plot from recognizing a connection. The Way of Kings supplies the first part of the Stormlight story. Warbreaker supplies context from elsewhere in the shared universe. Treating both as the same kind of prerequisite makes the reading plan harder than it needs to be.
Our answer is about enjoying the main narrative. A reader who likes tracing every cross-world connection may choose a more elaborate route, but that does not make the route mandatory for everyone.
What do you gain by reading Warbreaker first?
Sanderson explains that tidbits across the Cosmere can inform other books without needing to be noticed to enjoy a story on its own. That is the useful principle here: extra context can produce recognition, while the scene still has a role in the book you are reading.[1]
We deliberately do not name the connections. A supposedly spoiler-free checklist that tells you whom to look for can remove the discovery it claims to preserve.
Read Warbreaker because its own story appeals to you, too. Choosing an entire novel only to decode a handful of moments can make it feel like homework. If a change of cast and setting sounds refreshing after The Way of Kings, this is a natural place for that pause.
Should you pause your Stormlight reading?
| Where you are | Our suggestion | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Finished The Way of Kings and ready for a different story | Read Warbreaker, then Words of Radiance. | Pause the immediate Stormlight continuation. |
| Finished The Way of Kings and eager to continue | Read Words of Radiance. | Recognize some wider connections later. |
| Already partway through Words of Radiance | Keep reading. | Accept retrospective recognition rather than interrupting the book. |
If you have already passed a connection without recognizing it, you have not ruined either book. A later reading can change how you understand a remembered scene. Sanderson explicitly describes that sort of discovery as one of the rewards of rereading.[1]
Avoid trying to repair your sequence mid-chapter. Finish the book you are invested in, then make the next choice with a clearer sense of what you want.
Does the Cosmere timeline change that advice?
Sanderson’s published chronology places Warbreaker before The Stormlight Archive, but that list is an outline of fictional history, not a command to read every earlier work first. It also notes that other stories fit within the larger sequence.[3]
The same choice applies if you listen instead of read. An audiobook is another way to experience the story; it does not become an additional adventure to complete after the print edition. Choose the format that fits your attention and time.
For the broader entry-point decision, use the Cosmere starting article. For this narrower one, keep the rule simple: continue Stormlight in its own sequence, and add Warbreaker when the extra context is worth the detour to you.
