Star Wars Before You Watch / Read / Play
Should You Watch Andor Before or After Rogue One?
Choose Andor first for Cassian’s unfolding story or Rogue One first for release order. Understand the season-two time jumps without plot spoilers.
The short answer
For Cassian’s story in chronological order, watch Andor Season 1, Andor Season 2, then Rogue One. Watching Rogue One first is also valid: that is how the character originally reached audiences. Our recommendation for a newcomer interested in Andor is to start with the series and let the film follow it. You do not need a complete Star Wars marathon first.[1][3]

What changes when you reverse the order?
| Approach | Sequence | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Cassian’s developing story | Andor Seasons 1–2 → Rogue One | Meet the television characters before the film’s mission. |
| Original release experience | Rogue One → Andor Seasons 1–2 | Watch the prequel with knowledge of the later story. |
The difference is anticipation. Starting with the series keeps more of the destination unknown. Starting with the film gives the series a sense of approaching something you already know. Neither choice changes the timeline; it changes what you bring to each scene.
If you have already watched Rogue One, there is no correction to make. Follow Andor in episode order, then revisit the film if you want to see how your understanding of Cassian has changed. A rewatch can be worthwhile without becoming another required step.
How do Andor’s two seasons fit?
Lucasfilm places the beginning of Andor about five years before Rogue One. Season 2 covers the remaining years through four three-episode arcs, with a year separating the arcs. It is not simply another season taking place entirely in the following year.[1][2]
Watch those episodes in their presented sequence. The year jumps are part of the storytelling, and flashbacks remain inside the episodes that introduce them. Do not extract childhood scenes or retrospective moments to manufacture a scene-by-scene chronology.
If a date card briefly leaves you wondering how much time has passed, use the arc boundary as your reference. You do not need to calculate every scene against the whole franchise calendar to follow the political and personal consequences.
What comes after Rogue One?
A New Hope is the next film for this particular screen route. Lucasfilm describes Andor as a prequel to Rogue One and Rogue One as the story that sets up the original 1977 film.[1]
That is a useful continuation if you want to follow the rebellion onward. It does not mean you must finish the original trilogy before deciding whether you liked Andor. Make the next choice one story at a time.
Other series occupy parts of the same broad era. Their presence on a timeline shows shared historical space, not a requirement to interrupt Cassian’s route between episodes.
How much Star Wars background do you need?
For our Andor-first recommendation, the useful starting idea is simple: the Empire governs through coercion, and resistance is fragmented. Let the series introduce the people, institutions and competing motives. Familiar faces reward previous viewing, but looking up every cameo can expose later developments.
Prefer the full chronology when you want to explore another thread from this era. Keep this shorter sequence when your question is what to watch next after an Andor episode.
